WHAT WE DO - KATA, KIHON & KUMITE

KATA

Seibukan Karate places a strong emphasis on katas (forms), which are sequences of movements that teach principles of movement, balance, power, and technique. These katas have been passed down for generations and are central to understanding the art Seibukan Kata are structured sequences of techniques that replicate combat scenarios. Okinawan masters distilled their fighting methods into these patterns, allowing practitioners to repeatedly hone their skills. By engaging in daily, focused practice over years, kata training ingrains self-defense techniques into the subconscious mind, ensuring immediate, instinctive responses without the need for conscious thought

KUMITE

Ippon Kumite focuses on preventing continuous attacks from an opponent. Often misunderstood as a method to develop a single finishing technique, its true purpose is to limit the attacker to just one attempt through the defender’s evasive maneuvers and blocks. The counterattack becomes almost secondary. Mastery of ippon kumite is achieved when the defender can evade and unbalance the attacker, preventing any successive attacks.

One step self defence techniques.
Kumite trains the mind to effectively use kata techniques. The "bunkai," or applications of these techniques, should be practiced in combat scenarios with a partner. Partner drills are essential for developing self-control, as precision and control are crucial to avoid injury and instill discipline. Mastering precision is also key to neutralizing an attacker by striking specific targets accurately.

Karate's value extends far beyond the realm of fighting. When practiced with the right intent, it becomes a path to personal growth, discipline, and self-improvement. The art of karate cultivates respect, humility, and mental fortitude, offering benefits that enrich all aspects of life.

KIHON

The strongest chain is only as strong as the weakest link. We must train on basics to allow our body's to move effortlessly and without thought.

Kihon Renshu is the essential training regimen designed to teach the body the foundational forms and movements of Shorin-Ryu Seibukan. This static routine alternates focus from one side of the body to the other, emphasizing core rotation. Each technique within Kihon Renshu is crafted to develop a strong, flexible physique. Mastering these basic movements significantly enhances one's ability to perform kata with precision and effectiveness.

Zenshin Kotai (Moving Drills) emphasizes mobility through the basic forms and movements. Proper footwork is crucial for agility, and correct stance transitions are key to stability. In combat, quick movements are essential for dodging and attacking. Since an attack typically precedes a defense, blocks must be executed with exceptional speed. Sometimes, adopting a strong posture is necessary to effectively defend and counter. Chotoku Kyan was renowned for his distinctive and effective fighting style. He skillfully maneuvered in and out of range, evading and striking his opponents with immense power.
